Three months since the Great Earthquake, life of earthquake affected people is gradually gaining normalcy but not without the deep scar left behind by the devastating earthquake. People along with support from government, international and local organizations are now moving forward with recovery, rehabilitation and rebuilding activities.
CECI Nepal kick-started recovery activities in 2 districts (Sindhupalchowk and Lalitpur) as a humanitarian response to Nepal earthquake - 2015.
After earthquake of April 25 and aftershock of May 12:
1.1 million people in need of water services
1 million people in need of sanitation services
3 million people in need of hygiene services

Following the Nepal PDNA Report published on June 2015, CECI Nepal is now focusing on WASH, agriculture, livestock and livelihood recovery during the Recovery Phase.
The main aim of CECI Nepal's Recovery Phase is to support the communities in smoothing their livelihood activities through agricultural restoration, recovery and initiation of "on and off-farm micro-enterprises" so that the people can rebuild their income generating activities in restoring their livelihoods.
Likewise, CECI Nepal's Recovery Phase aims to; promote sound agricultural recovery practices including farming of short duration vegetables crops in Sindhupalchowk, and replace livestock breeds (buffalo) that is recommended by the District Agricultural Office, Lalitpur. CECI Nepal is supporting farmers of Lalitpur to repair and maintain cattle sheds and rebuild dairy enterprise, which is the main source of livelihood in Southern Lalitpur.
In Sindhupalchowk district alone, following the earthquake and its several aftershocks, about 80 % of the toilets have collapsed. CECI Nepal is planning for WASH interventions by coordinating with Village WASH Coordination Committees and Local Partners. This includes supplying of toilet pans and supporting the repair and reconstruction of toilets of the entire household of 3 target VDCs in Sindhupalchowk and 1 VDC in Laliltpur. CECI Nepal plans to reach approximately 1,350 households with toilet facility.
Similarly, in 3 target Village Development Committees (VDCs) of Sindhupalchowk and 1 VDC in Lalitpur, CECI Nepal is supporting the communities to repair and reconstruct drinking water facilities for safe drinking water supply. CECI Nepal plans to install 54 intakes for drinking water facility. CECI Nepal is also providing hygiene kits to the households of the target VDCs of Sindhupalchowk and Lalitpur districts.
The Epidemiology and Diseases Control Division (EDCD) under the Ministry of Health reported fresh cases of typhoid in Batase VDC of Sindhupalchowk, adjoining VDC of CECI Nepal's target VDC. Under such circumstance, CECI Nepal's WASH initiative plays a significant role in availing earthquake affected people with clean drinking water and toilet facility to combat the possible outbreak of the contagious disease.
“A few cases diagnosed as typhoid fever is reported from Sindhupalchowk. Locals have been found drinking polluted river water and personal hygiene conditions are found poor,” Baburam Marasini, director of EDCD.

CECI Nepal's Earthquake Response Team including the Field Coordinator and WASH Engineer successfully completed field assessment in the target VDCs of Sindhupalchowk to carry forward the Recovery Phase activities. The team found that the beneficiaries are very appreciative of CECI Nepal's support and very much looking forward for WASH interventions.
