In the context of a world confronted by extreme phenomena, the frequency and intensity of which are being exacerbated by climate change, we echo the UN Secretary-General in stating that women offer solutions. CECI has accumulated 65 years of knowledge in international solidarity and places women at the heart of intelligent and innovative solutions in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Americas, while promoting North-South, South-North collaboration with local partners. It’s with pride that we continue today to support women’s leadership to advance their rights and contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable future.
Attaining this objective also requires men’s involvement through more co-responsible, democratic masculinities that acknowledge the importance of gender equality. Women are also often the first to find survival strategies and to be agents of change. Strengthening women’s economic power promotes families’ survival and helps them find solutions to their impoverishment as well as that of their communities.
Over the course of our history, we’ve been present in more than 30 countries and have contributed to the transformation and development of communities. Our programs and projects have had an indirect positive impact on more than 28 million people, of whom more than half are women. We’ve had a direct positive impact on 6.5 million people, 55% of whom are women. Our training of 15,000 Canadian volunteers has contributed to attaining these results, as has the collaboration of 8000 local organizations.
This is the 36th International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. On this occasion, CECI, which leads sustainable development projects around the world with its partners, is calling on the Canadian government, solidarity organizations, the academic world and Canadians to support social justice causes in order to truly fight poverty and deal with climate change by supporting women’s leadership and the promotion of their rights and economic empowerment.
