Tanzania is a young but stable democracy that has driven over a decade of strong economic growth. This is due largely to its vast natural resources and tourist attractions, such as Africa’s highest mountain. However, the country’s economy remains highly dependent on agriculture. Despite gains in the economy and declines in poverty rates, the absolute number of poor has not declined, due to strong population growth in the country.

Various sectors show promising trends of income generating opportunities for women and youth, particularly the fruit and vegetable subsector, and the tourism sector. By building on these strengths and collaborating with strategic local partners to maximize impact, WUSC improved the living conditions of some of the most marginalized communities in five regions across the country.
